Alder Hey Children’s Hospital charity donation

As one of the busiest paediatric hospitals in Europe, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital‘s ophthalmology department has seen some recent exciting investments to its diagnostic and therapeutic portfolio. This generous donation from Spectrum will bolster its ambitions to be a leading centre of excellence not just regionally but nationally.

The modern ophthalmology examination has evolved. However, there is a need to train junior ophthalmologists and other healthcare professionals on using widefield contact retinal cameras in order to improve diagnostic capabilities, open up remote ophthalmology, and digitise the paediatric retinal examination for artificial intelligence research.

The ophthalmology department in Alder Hey Children’s Hospital is delighted with the generous donation of one such retinal camera (FORUS Neo) to our ophthalmic imaging suite.

Our donation will help to enhance paediatric eye care services in Liverpool and the surrounding community. By providing this support, we aim to maximise the development of a clinical skillset in the digital imaging of paediatric retina by ophthalmologists, nurses and other allied health professionals. The portability of this technology will also allow clinicians to start shifting towards a different paradigm of patient care, one where specialist ROP services can travel to the baby, rather than the other way around. Therefore, increasing patient access to essential care, including the possibility of utilising the product in satellite units, bringing care closer to home for families.

This initiative aligns with our steadfast commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and our mission of “Bringing greater vision to everyone.” Specifically, it enables us to facilitate and educate a whole new generation of clinicians on the vital screening of ocular diseases in newborn babies, particularly targeting potentially severe Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROPROP). Timely detection and intervention for ROP are critical, as untreated cases can lead to serious vision impairment. We recognise the importance of ensuring that all babies at risk of sight-threatening ROP receive timely screenings to safeguard their vision and future well-being.

Through this donation and our broader CSR efforts, we are proud to contribute to the health and well-being of the community, reinforcing our dedication to making a meaningful impact where it matters most.
